There are many different types of fireworks and the visual and sound effects that they produce when they are detonated. These also fall under general classifications relating to the result of ignition. The most commonly seen is the ‘Peony’ which produces a shower of stars. Very similar to this is the ‘Chrysanthemum’ which also produces stars but they leave a trail in the sky as they fall, also similar are the ‘Dahlia’ and the ‘Willow”.
The ‘Palm’ is a display that releases a long stem followed by a shower of tendrils to form the shape of a Palm tree, hence its name. A ‘Ring’ firework produces as the name implies a ring formation as it detonates. Other variations include smiley faces, hearts and clovers. The ‘Kamuro’ is named after a Japanese hairstyle that the effect resembles which is a dense burst of gold or silver stars with a heavy trail. Other types of firework include the Spider, the Crossette, the Horsetail, the Diadem, Time Rain, Multi-Break shells, Fish, the Salute, the Lampare, the Mine, the Roman Candle and the Cake!
With such a vast amount of contrast and effects there is much competition within the industry to produce bigger and better fireworks with more stunning displays. The World Pyro Olympics is held annually in Manilla to allow Firework manufacturers and display co-coordinators from worldwide to exhibit their new products and compete against each other for the best display. The first of these competitions was held in December 2005 and ran for 5 days and is considered now to be the greatest fireworks display in the world.
